Volume 3, Issue 1
Several years ago, in an interview with the Sunpapers music critic about repertoire for an upcoming season I told him it was difficult choosing between an all-Mozart program (including the Requiem), and an all-Bach program. The article opened something like: “Ba, Mo, Ba, Mo, Ba, Mo, . . . . that was the response from Edward Polochick when I asked him who his favorite composer is; he can’t make up his mind between Bach or Mozart!” I thought it an amusing way of expressing my frustration in trying to choose a favorite composer, or at the very least, choosing between Bach and Mozart. Musically for me, it’s like choosing between air and water for life—which is more necessary?

The answer, of course, is that you cannot live without either one. And, musically speaking, that is equally true of Bach and Mozart. Now that’s a rather strong statement, and I’d like to take a moment and elaborate on it. I have always believed that any musician who is well-schooled in the Baroque and Classical periods (i.e., any instrumentalist, singer or conductor who develops the technique and musicianship capable of handling all the musical demands of these periods) will be able to perform and master music from any other period, style or genre, including that of the 21st Century! In essence, training in these periods lays the foundation for everything a musician needs to excel in this field. Of course, there are other ‘greats’ from these periods, e.g., Handel, Vivaldi, Schubert, Haydn and Beethoven, but no one could argue the critical importance of Bach and Mozart and the major contribution each made to Western music. I am thrilled that this season we are devoting an entire program to each of these musical giants.

We will open our 05-06 Season with a special concert devoted to the musical genius of J. S. Bach. About every other year we have presented a concert which is a kind of retrospective of the life and times of a particular composer. Thus far we have done one on Schubert, one on Haydn and one on Mozart. They have all been collaborations with WBJC’s Jonathan Palevsky and have all been extremely popular. Jonathan has quite a gift for uncovering fascinating and elucidating information and materials which offer incredible insights into the hearts and minds of these great composers, and he complements his narration with a visual power-point presentation. We even occasionally delight in (and sometimes are shocked by) some of the more unseemly or questionable aspects of a composer’s life and time. I am sure that this concert on J. S. Bach will be no different!

Since all of the repertoire and excerpts we will be presenting on October 15th will be explained by Jonathan that evening, I won’t delve into any historical background on Bach. But, I want to share with you the music excerpts we will be performing on Saturday, October 15th.

I must say that I feel as if I am one of the luckiest people alive to have the opportunity to share all of this wonderful music. I know we will all have an enjoyable evening celebrating the life and times and music of Johann Sebastian Bach—I hope to see you there too!
